Purim 2011
|
The Jewish festival of Purim is celebrated this year on 19th and 20th March. For those of you who do not know, Purim is a fun festival where everyone dresses up in fancy dress costumes and disguises.
Purim celebrates an ancient story about a King of Persia who married a beautiful Jewish girl called Esther. The Grand Vizier of the palace, Haman, was upset with her Uncle Mordechai and tried various schemes to have Mordechai and eventually the entire Jewish people exterminated. Through Esther, Haman’s plans came to nothing, everyone was saved and Haman was hanged.
To remember the story and the power of love defeating evil, celebrations are held in Jewish communities with plays and fancy dress and eating. It’s a fun time for adults and children.
