back buttonPancake Hints and Tips

Pancake is a wonderful make up, easily applied and removed, giving great coverage but also allowing some of the tones of the skin to show through. If you follow the hints and tips below you should have no trouble achieving a great effect. Depth of colour can be adjusted by applying a thinner layer, or for deeper colour it can be applied slightly thicker. If you require an opaque coverage try our face paint (return to the site home page and add ‘face paint’ to the search box).

Before you start make sure that the face is clean and dry, do not apply moisturiser. It is advisable to wash your face 20 or 30 minutes before you make up (your skin may produce oil just after washing and this allows the skin to calm down).

Cut the sponge into quarters, this will give you a nice sharp edge for details like under eyes. You will need an open foam sponge, not the white latex triangles used with fashion cosmetics, our make up sponges are usually round (although colour may vary) and are designed to pick up and hold the colour until you apply it to the face.

Rinse out the sponge, squeeze it until it is almost dry (known as a humid sponge) you do not want it wet, as the make up will simply run. Rub the sponge round the pancake until one side of the sponge has picked up colour.

Wipe and dab the sponge over the face recharging the sponge when the colour starts to get thin. Do not go over areas that are covered as you will wipe off the make up. Concentrate on areas like the under eye, you need to get as close as possible to the lashes. Try sitting down with a mirror on your lap, looking down into the mirror and pushing the sharp edge of the sponge up against the lashes.

Pushing your hair away from the face work into the hairline, we have chosen to stop the make up at the jaw line, this gives a mask like effect, if you were to paint your face green to look like a witch it would look better if the make up extended down to your costume. Pancake can also be used on your hands, but it will come off on items that you touch.
