Start off with an A4 piece of paper, we have gone for cream, but white would do. Alternatively you could go for parchment style paper. If you wish you could print your invitations at this stage. You will need to use a water resistant print, as all the text will be getting wet. Next make yourself a nice strong cup of tea, take the tea bag out before you add the milk and allow the tea bag to cool.

Before the tea bag dries out you need to paint the surface of each invite with the wet tea stain. This will make the paper very wet, don’t panic, this is what we need. Stain the paper on both sides.

In random areas over the paper add single grains of instant coffee onto the wet surface. If the paper is wet enough you will see the dark stain spread out immediately, if the paper has dried out too much just add a drop of warm water.

To curl the ends of the scroll wind the bottom of the paper away from you around a pen, the top then needs to be wrapped around another pen, but this time wind it towards you. The important thing is that one goes one way and the other goes the other way. Now the paper needs to be left somewhere warm and airy until the paper is totally dry.

Now that the paper is dry it should have taken on a crinkled appearance, this is what we are after, do not try to smooth it out. Rip the edges on all 4 sides of the paper; this will make it look even more scruffy and aged.

Finished! You can now write your party details onto the scroll and hand them out, don’t forget to recommend www.fancydress.com as your preferred costume supplier. In our version of the scroll we have set fire to the edges of the paper and then blown this out immediately. This gives a great effect but is not something we recommend without working in a very safe way (always under adult supervision). The same sort of effect at the edges can be obtained using dark brown wax crayon.
