Life is just one long Teddy Bear’s Picnic!
If you go down to the costumiers you’re in for a big surprise! Angels supplied costumes for the Roundabout Theatre’s Man for all Seasons on Broadway.
The play starred the renowned actor Frank Langella as Sir Thomas Moore, Mr Langella has twice won Broadway’s Tony Award and is soon to be seen as Nixon in the ‘FROST/NIXON’ movie. Great designs were received from Cathy Zuber recreating the court of Henry VIII. Sir Thomas Moore’s costumes were specially created in our workrooms.
We were approached by Broadway Bears, an AIDS Charity in New York that has raised over $140 million for those living with HIV/AIDS in the US. They have a stock of teddy bears and these are dressed as stars from the biggest shows on Broadway and these beautifully dressed bears are auctioned off to raise cash, with one bear raising $30,000.
It is considered a great honor in the costume industry to be commissioned to make one of these bears. So we agreed to make a faithful scale reproduction of the costume. A flat-packed bear arrived at our tailing department in an envelope. The team had to stuff the bear several times before they were happy with him, they then took measurements; just the same as we would for a major star.
The costume was made in the same way as the original with the little bodice part of the costume so heavily stitched with detail it stood up on its own! The craftsmanship by our fantastic team of tailors jewellers furriers cobblers and milliners really is impressive!
The bear has been dressed and has been packed off to the auction, which is due to take place on Sunday 15th Feb 2009.
We wish Sir Thomas lots of luck and hopes he raises a fortune!
